Whenever I listen to Tom Palmer [2] lecture – as I did last week in Romania – I’m impressed with how many books I should have read that I have yet to read. So here, in my chagrin, I submit to the world my current list of the top ten books that I should have read by now in my career but that I haven’t yet read:
10. Erasmus’s In Praise of Folly [3]
9. Boswell’s Life of Johnson [4]
8. Alfred Marshall’s Principles of Economics [5]
7. Cervantes’s Don Quixote [6]
6. Eli Heckscher’s Mercantilism [7]
5. Aristotle’s The Nicomachean Ethics [8]
4. The Odyssey [9]
3. The Iliad [10]
2. The King James version of The Bible [11] (cover to cover; I’ve read large chunks of it)
1. Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire [12]
