Speaking of perfect political speech, has anyone noticed how masterfully McCain is playing (interrupting) Obama’s prime-time acceptance speech tonite by leaking his VP pick?

Totally devoid of substance, but awesome timing….

It is amazing that Hillary was able to remember the details of those three recited incidents under the stress of running across the tarmac under sniper fire in the different USA cities she has visited.

Got to admire that woman for good rememberance(?) under that kind of pressure.

What is frightening is that there are people we rub shoulders with every day who will take those fabricated little tales and believe they are the literal truth. Then those people will have access to the voting booth come November.

This government is too far gone to fix and it is glaringly obvious. Time to discard it and start all over. Refresh Jefferson's "tree of liberty", so to speak.

Don says: "Sen. Clinton's speech is predictably full of typical political nonsense, posturing, and hubris pretending to be humility."

Don, tell me truth... Why should I believe that this country is on anything but a downward trajectory?

Did she mention raising the marginal tax rate? "That's what I'm Talkin about".

She should also add increased environmental regulations. "Uh, Huh! Uh, Huh!".

What about universal pre-school? "Hallelujah!!!".

A later version that Steve Goodman often played also incorporated dogs, Christmas and farms into the final verse:

Ever since the dog got drunk and died
And momma went to prison
There ain’t nothin’ 'round this farm that’s been the same
And you know when mom broke out last Christmas
She drove the goddamn getaway laundry truck right into a train

The song's chorus applies to Hillary too, considering how long she stuck around in the primaries when it was clear she wouldn't win and also the many times she's vacillated on what to be called (Hillary, Hillary Clinton, Hillary Rodham, Hillary Rodham Clinton, etc.):

I'm going to hang around as long as you let me
And I never minded standing in the rain
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
But you never even called me by name

I keep coming back to the decision made by each of these examplars. What was the utility preceived prior to the commission of decision?

What was the utility perceived by a woman without health insurance deciding that her life would only receive a greater utility through the adoption of children with special needs? The timing of the cancer notwithstanding, how does a woman who can't provide health insurance for herself--one assumes it was known that these children had been diagnosed with autism prior to their adoption--think when adopting two children with health problems? Was there an economic utility? An emotional utility? And was there a board of review that examined this woman's request for adoption? Did they, in the best interests of the children, determine that the utility received by their adoption from a woman without the means to provide for them increased the overall utility they received? "Sure, this woman is financially on the ropes, but the kids need someone?"

And the former service member "who waited months for medical care." What utility did he receive from denying himself medical care, if medical care or treatment was indicate? (I seem to recall this story appearing earlier in the campaign, and was totally debunked. Seems the feller never went for help.)

Maybe he perceived himself as in some process of atonement--akin to striking oneself on the back with stinging nettles? I've never understood the utility received through such an application, but I have every reason to suspect that it has been done.

And finally, the mom with cut hours. Living in Oregon, the minimum wage was increased in this state to $7.95. I have often questioned the utility of that increase, since it is easy to demonstrate that increasing the cost of an input will put pressure on business or firm to reduce or replace that input. But rather than analyse how this displacement occured--or probably occured--we have a mom that with experience we are able to predict the set of skills that she brought to the labour market. And when the employer took a look at her contribution to the production processs, determined that her contribution didn't pencil. But instead of Senator Hillary asking this boy--a convenient cut-out--why his mother hadn't the basic skills to hold onto her minimum wage job, we end up with a post-modern Dick Whittington and His Cat. Not every story will end with a Dickinsian happy ending.

Or, am I too curmudgeonly?

Hey Don,

You know how sometimes politicians let their guard down and allow certain people to ask questions of them like "what's the price of a gallon of milk?" You should send some intro to micro exams (or a shortened version) to both candidates and try to get them to answer them (without the help of aides) and send it back to be graded to gauge their level of economic knowledge.

This reminds me of the Christmas Hillary commercial, which was such a perfect metaphor of exactly what her critics had already said. She had gift boxes with tags of all the special programs she's promising. Then she says "Oh let's see, where did I put universal health care... Oh, here it is!"

I was stunned that we've gotten to the point that they made this ad with a sense of pride, instead of shame.

My second thought re: this post, remember Mad Libs? The little flip books that were great for riding in the car or buss on school field trips? I can imagine leftist Mad Libs. Whole speeches with little blanks inserted for (welfare program here) and (cut taxes on middle class promise here) and (get the rich claim) here.

This article illustrates the underlying story and sad truth that freedom lovers do not want to discuss or even acknowledge. Our cherished notion of Universal Sufferage would also be our downfall if universal voting was mandated or fact.

Elections would always be won by the best "promiser". The winning candidate would always be the one offering the most for a vote. You can alway count on Paul's vote when you rob Peter to pay him.

The stories told by Clinton upset you because they are effective. Politicians use these anecdotal stories because it plays to the emotions of potential voters and gets votes. Politicians tell these stories "because they work" to fool a sadly large percentage of voters.

Thank the universe that a sizable portion of potential voters are too lazy to vote.

Don, this one is so profound (as is the humility comment) I want to send it to everyone I know. It's hard to believe we, the populace, any of us, can tolerate such hyper-ambitious people telling us what great things they want to do for us in service of their own ego and ambition. I wouldn't think it would be palatable to anyone - therefore proving I know very little. I do think there's hope as political hyperbole careens into "absurdity-land" that it will at some point stimulate a backlash. Thanks for a fantastic summary of the Hilliary speech.
