Here is today's opinion in the NYT about why government is so capable of successfully providing national health care. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/opinion/03kristof.html?_r=1&ref=opinion

My thought is that the examples of police departments and fire departments are not appropriate since those are local organizations that are accountable to the local community. A federal healthcare system is not the same, and as such, would not be effective.

Medicare is held out as a great example of government success. It does seem like people who have Medicare like it because it provides good coverage. But the medical professionals who provide the care and get paid by Medicare, at least it is my perception, do not like it since the reimbursements are so low. Plus the system is going bankrupt, so that is not my idea of success.

Except Major Garrett hardly ever gave tough questions to his neoconservative constituents.

http://www.newshounds.us/2004/12/01/major_garre...

He promoted big government under Bush and has turned the page because a different party is in power. John Stossel is way above Major Garrett's league when it comes to journalism credibility.

Nice job at the ad hominem attack. Shows real lack of a defendable position.

@austroliberal

This discussion wasn't addressing any reporter's personal political views; this discussion is about whether reporters do their jobs in questioning politicians and gov't policies, or are simply spokesmen for said politicians.

To that end, Garrett does a good job. Whether he is personally a liberal, conservative, libertarian, neocon, socialist, statist or whatever is completely irrelevant.
