At National Review Online, the Cato Institute’s Dan Griswold persuasively warns against a faux friend of free markets.  (HT Andy Roth)

  • Griswold's assessment seems spot-on but for the passage in which he claims, in a round-about way, that 26 million jobs were added in the U.S. "after" NAFTA. I noticed that he doesn't say NAFTA "created" 26 million jobs. He can't say that because he doesn't know. I'm sure--ideologically sure, that is--that things like NAFTA will help the economy grow and provide jobs. I'd prefer it if there were no trade restrictions whatsoever, so that trade agreements like NAFTA wouldn't even be necessary. But I'd like to see the data that suggest that 26 million jobs added over the course of 14 years--a period including two booms and two busts--happened because of NAFTA. Again, I know Griswold doesn't say NAFTA created those jobs on its own. But as a free-trader, I'm suspicious of cheerleading things like NAFTA when their real benefits are unclear.
