My Favorite American

Over at EconLog, David Henderson and Alberto Mingardi celebrate – with some of their favorite quotations from the birthday boy – H.L. Mencken’s birthday.  Regular Cafe patrons will not be surprised to read me here repeat my favorite Mencken insight:

The saddest life is that of a political aspirant under democracy.  His failure is ignominious and his success is disgraceful.

This quotation was my Quotation of the Day back on November 8, 2011.
