Another environmental consideration that is directly relevant to any discussion of locavorism is urbanization. As we argued in chapter 1, there can be no sustained economic development without cities, and, for at least a few millennia, urbanization has been impossible without significant long distance trade in food. Locavorism, though, is inherently anti-urban as it effectively mandates low density settlements distributed over the arable landscape (in our experience, though, a number of locavores do not grasp this implication).
