A Protectionist is Someone Who…

… would regard as an unambiguous economic calamity for the home country the invention by one of his fellow citizens of a material that can be produced at 1/1,000th of the cost of steel and aluminum, can serve better every purpose for which steel and aluminum are currently used, and is easier and far less costly to fashion into different forms, is lighter weight, and is much longer-lasting than are steel and aluminum.  Indeed, a protectionist is someone who – were he consistent – believes that humanity would today be much more prosperous had the wheel, the ax, the hammer, and the lever never been invented.
