The admission is startling. Arch-populist Eric Alterman , when asked about his charitable activities, replied that his “children go to public school!”
It is indeed charitable to the bevy of politicians, bureaucrats, and flunkies who run government “schools” to entrust to them the education of your very own children. Of course, to your children it’s a crime. But, hey, what is real charity if not the sacrifice of your personal and family interests to the benefit of strangers?
Alterman’s revelation of his particular charitable impulse appears in a letter-to-the-editor of the Atlantic Monthly (November 2004) by Heather Thomas.
