In today’s Wall Street Journal, [2] the Mercatus Center’s [3] Veronique de Rugy advises Uncle Sam — in the name of small businesses — "Laissez-nous faire." Here’s a slice of Vero’s wisdom:
{G]overnments at all levels should reduce the large regulatory burdens
that afflict small business. Reams of mind-numbing regulations add a
hefty cost of $5,600 per employee to enterprises of all sizes. It’s
worse for small businesses. In a SBA study on the impact of regulatory
costs on the smallest firms, economist Mark Crain of Lafayette College
notes that complying with federal regulations costs companies with
fewer than 20 workers an average of $7,647 per employee.
