So the United States has a Trade Representative who clearly is clueless about trade. Robert Lighthizer might well be a genius lawyer, a spectacular golfer, the world’s greatest father, a neighbor to die for, a ballroom dancer of unmatched grace, an unparalleled expert on baseball trivia, a pet owner second to none, whatever – but as someone who is supposed (according to the fairy tale) to help conduct U.S. government trade policy in a manner that enriches Americans, the man is an imbecile. His knowledge of trade is equivalent to a 9th-century witch-doctor’s knowledge of modern cardiology [2].
