It’s Actually Unfortunate that this Guy Can Stop Worrying

Tweet [1]

Here’s a letter to the Wall Street Journal:

Dave Rossow worries about what would happen “in case all our jobs go away” (Letters [2], Oct. 29). He can stop worrying.

Except for government-orchestrated make-work, all jobs exist to satisfy human wants that would otherwise remain unsatisfied. This fact is true for the pharmacist no less than for the farm hand, and for the website designer no less than for the welder. All our jobs will go away, therefore, only if and when all our wants go away – that is, only if and when all human wants are fully satisfied. And while I would enthusiastically welcome such a paradise here on earth, I’m quite sure that it’s not in our cards.

Sincerely,
