The more free trade in the world, the better, but the minimum requirement and the most practical demand to make is that one’s own government not prohibit one from importing freely. Protectionism mainly harms people in the very countries whose governments impose it. A practical goal is to free one’s own country before trying to persuade foreign governments to abolish the restraints on their citizens.

DBx: Those persons who denounce most grandiloquently the offenses against free trade committed by foreign governments are the same persons who demand most strenuously the practice of protectionism by the home government.
