Here’s the worst piece of domestic news that I’ve read in a long time. It comes from John Tierney writing near the end of his column in today’s New York Times:
Whatever they [the Congress] do the next two years, I won’t be here to kick them
around. This is my last column on the Op-Ed page. I’ve enjoyed the past
couple of years in Washington, but one election cycle is enough. I’m
returning full time to the subject and the city closest to my heart:
science and New York. I’ll be writing a column and a blog for the
Science Times section.
Science journalism will be much improved. The NYT‘s op-ed page will be desolate.

Yeah, but the Times' editorial page has long since ceased to be interesting. Paul Krugman used to be a marvelous (although eccentric) essayist, but the Times turned him shrill and tedious. The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal are much more interesting, as are Britain's Telegraph and Times. More to the point, the internet has made so many outlets easily accessible that browsing on a Sunday morning beats reading the Times.
…just how they like it.
