What do you think of the current congressional refrain to the automakers: "Just bring us a proposal, and we'll vote for it"? The whole mess just leaves me shaking my head. Just wish the media would go interview a Honda worker in Alabama and ask him how he feels about his tax dollars being used to bail out his (more inefficient) competitor.

Of course you saw the picture on the front page of the Wall Street Journal this morning, with the caption:

PRAYING FOR HELP: retired United Auto Workers members offer a prayer for the economy at a monthly benefits meeting...

What were they praying for, a reduction of their benefits?

Oh god I hope the Journal publishes that. That's an instant classic.

In case there was any confusion, the instant classic was certainly Don's original piece and not my little comment.

Actually everything Don and Russ do is an instant classic. This is the best writing on economics I have ever seen, never any damn graphs or charts or pretentious language, but simplicity, clarity, wit and wisdom that is beautiful to behold and a pleasure and a privilege to read.

How about this:

If Mises was the Beethoven of economics, Boudreaux is its Gershwin.

What's sad is to watch these companies squirm and beg before the political santas.

It's truly pathetic.

Government is the problem.

What's the difference between a Congressional Ho in a three piece suit, and a street corner Ho in fishnet stockings and Walmart sneakers?

The street corner Ho will quote you a firm price and deliver what is bargained for.

I know Don, t'ain't the kinda Ho you were talking about above, but it just fit.

I suppose that no man may live without hope, and so politicians make promises and government institutionalizes hope for the people, by complicating it beyond understanding and warping it with fear.

The idea that despite the enormous difficulty of circumstances, government is ably watching over you, trying to save you, creates apathy in the people, as well as a greedy attitude that is the lazy, twisted other face of hope - we need not rely on our own merits when someone will give us something for nothing.

So we reward begging and we watch the beggars multiply.
