Each passing year that I live I see more clearly the sharp division between the lovers of freedom, the individual, life, liberty, self promotion, and the pursuit of happiness, and lovers of tyranny, the collective, conformity, restriction, slavery, and obedience to the elites.
For 68 years I have watched the latter try to impose its will on the former and the division only widens and the emotions only run hotter.
Will this be responsible for a true civil war at some point? It is a question that the lovers of freedom had better take seriously, because it is evident that the lovers of tyranny have their plans laid and are slowly marching to a control of the armed agencies of America, police, state militias, military, BATF, FBI, DEA, Homeland Security, to use in controlling those who disagree with them and who would resist.
Even comfortable people get pissed after awhile when you mess with their comfort.
I see in the current events surrounding the townhall meetings on healthcare, that the left is more and more marching us to the precipice of unhealable internal strive that will be hard to resolve without violence.
The leftwing nattering heads screech in anger about rightwing disturbances at townhall meetings as a tactic to make their voices heard and express their dissatisfaction, and call it unamerican to behave in such a fashion.
Yet, we all know that the violent suppression of views counter to their beliefs is the most beloved and embraced traditional tactic of the leftwing. Ask Ann Coulter, Dr. Mike Adams, ask any prominent freedom lover who has been invited and scheduled to speak on any college campus in America has to how they were treated by the left. How frequently the left rises up and throws hissy fits on just learning that a noncommunist has been invivted to speak at their university.
The sickening hypocrisy of the left as demonstrated by Kessler et. al., is building the backlash that will come just as sure as God made little green apples, and that backlash has the potential to be very violent.

I was thinking along those same lines earlier today. I forget who it was that said “in any compromise between good and evil, only evil wins.” I am of the opinion that government – any government! – is evil, while individual liberty – all individual liberty! – is good.
Our country was doomed from the beginning. Our Founding Fathers put together as benign a government as has ever existed. But virtually from the beginning the forces of tyranny began asking for compromise (see Alexander Hamilton). George Washington – considered by his peers as the greatest of them all – brought us the Whiskey Rebellion. Even the most benign government ever created almost instantly began its march toward repression, secrecy, war. And it has been a steady march toward what we have today. Two steps toward socialism, followed by a lull, followed by more steps toward socialism.
Why did it happen the way it did? It was bound to happen that way because from the very beginning the “good” people compromised with the “evil” ones.
Our only hope for salvation is to throw off the yoke of oppressive government once and for all. And ALL governments are oppressive.

Actually Dan, I am not famous and have never been published and certainly not widely read in other than limited circles, but this “in any compromise between good and evil, only evil wins.” is something that I’ve written several times about on this blog. I have introduced it to muirduck for sure.
I can’t remember how long ago, but it has been many years, I came to the understanding that if a compromise was supposed to be each of two competing parties giving up something in order to find a common ground, it occurred to me that there was nothing in evil that good could gain from, and that anything good gave up was a gain for evil. Therefore a loss for good.
More or less you and I would agree that we are in a fight from which we can not retreat or stop going forward, if we do we lose.

Dan,
BTW, kudos to you on the Whiskey Rebellion. Not many people glom to the irony of the first president of the USA calling out Federally controlled troops to suppress a tax rebellion.
Check out the hard copy magazine. Gary Locke is the one who did the illustration, and it’s great work from an editorial standpoint.
I love it when someone can speak so much editorial content into a picture without needing word balloons or descriptions.

Back to the topic – isn’t simply a matter of fact that many people are overweight because calories are easy to get and most people are meso-endomorphs? You know the old story – people had to tend towards being a fast weight-gainer because of the sporadic food ingestion of the times of yore. People had to be fast during good times to survive lean times when they weren’t much food. On the other hand, few people are particularly ectomorphic, i.e. non weight-gainers. Ectomorphs are few and far between because they wouldn’t be able to store enough fat in the good times to survive the lean times. Besides ectomorphs aren’t regarded well by modern society – ecto-males are the proverbial skinny weaklings, whilst ecto-women look borderline anorexic (even though they aren’t) and have less chances to spread their genes to the next generation. After all, if modern society came to grief and everyone went back to family farms and hunting/gathering then being endomorphic would become an asset again.
One problem with the regulation is that junk food is going to the target when weight gain can come from any food. As long as you’re consuming more calories than what you’re burning off then you’re going to gain weight, regardless of how healthful or unhealthful the source of the calories are.

Anything to change the debate from a cerebral to visceral nature.

Not many obese folks over in North Korea, I’m told. And I’m pretty sure no one over there lives long enough to develop cardiovascular disease, some cancers and other expensive-to-treat ailments associated with longevity.
I’ll bet we could end our obesity epidemic in no time if we adopted their enlightened economic approach (Rickets, scurvy and mass starvation notwithstanding)!
