Do As I Say, Not as I Do

in Hubris and humility, Not from the Onion, Politics

According to Newsday, President Obama “sternly warned Wall Street against returning to reckless and unchecked behavior.”

Mr. Obama’s behavior is akin to Jack the Ripper sternly warning his buddies of the inappropriateness of staring at ladies’ bosoms.

I think our deal leader looks at what is wrong with the progressive/liberal movement and just assumes that everyone else is just as messed up.

The headline should read: “President Obama ‘sternly warned House Democrats against returning to reckless and unchecked behavior.’”

Eh? Returning? House democrats returning to?

Didn’t know they had ever abandoned it.

That is not a valid threat until there is a consequence.”…or I’ll regulate you out of business.”"…or I’ll tax you out of business.”"…or I’ll create incentives that will make unions mandatory in your industry.”"…or I’ll take you over, for the good of the nation.”"…or I’ll tell your mommy.”

The scary part is that his threat will work, because we know he’s capable of any and all of the above. (Thanks to flag@whitehouse.gov, he’s probably got my mom’s email address, too…)

I personally flagged everyone here on Cafe Hayek and reported you all to our new Thought Police.

I remember Bernake saying he thought that the banks would self regulate. If Obama really means no more bailouts isn’t that a good thing.

Anonymous September 15, 2009 at 3:48 am

Don’t you mean Greenspan, in his supposed “I was wrong about capitalism” testimony?

Anonymous September 14, 2009 at 9:08 pm

“Obama warned financial titans on
Monday — the first anniversary of the Lehman Brothers collapse —
they could not count on any more bailouts.”

Egads, sir, just what can they count on then? Are they no longer too big to fail? What changed in the last 9 months? Did Obama done gone and shrunk ‘em?

If they run aground and they get no bailout now, isn’t that kinda telling us that the claim in the first place that they are too big too fail was bogus crap? Obama talks bogus crap? Oh my God, noooooooo, please tell me it isn’t so!

Awesome! Unfortunately no one will get it who “matters”.

J Cortez September 14, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Be carefull, all of you. A recurring theme I keep seeing is that if you make snide comments about Obama’s policies, democratic party hacks say you are “racist.”

Of course, this is just as stupid and evil as when republican party hacks called people “un-american” for not supporting Bush II’s policies.

I had the same thought. The head of an institution running a $2,000 billion annual deficit lecturing others on being reckless.

Just unbelievable. US politicians are the most openly dishonest and fork-tongued hypocrites.

Anonymous September 15, 2009 at 1:17 am

Speaking of hypocrisy and not to change the subject a tad, but I will.Everyone demanded Rep Wilson apologize for calling the Pres a liar in his speech, but no one has called for the Pres to apologize for lying.Sup wi dat?

Anonymous September 15, 2009 at 3:40 am

I think you are mixing two very different issues here. Rep Wilson yelling ‘you lie!’ was a disturbance of decorum. There is no need to interrupt a President’s speech to air one’s grievances. There are enough fora to do that.
As for asking the President to apologize, what we really need are journalists with a spine who can grill him one-on-one on the facts, get him to admit he was wrong, and then demand an apology.

Anonymous September 15, 2009 at 10:10 am

What a whacky wonderful mysterious world this is that allows me to see as a disturbance of decorum the President standing on a public stage speaking to America and telling what he knows is a bald faced lie.

Now that’s a decorum buster in my world.

J Cortez September 15, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Sometimes the truth has to be told, decorum be damned. But what Wilson did was not intended to be truth so much as political hackery. In my view, Wilson is just another partisan hack that believes nothing and is automatically against anyone that doesn’t agree with his gang.

My big problem is that he and republicans (who I hate) were attacked for his outburst for the wrong reasons. Instead of getting to the nuts and bolts of Obama’s plan and why some hate it so vehemently, they focus on partisan issues only. While there are partisan forces at work, there is very good reason to question and to strenuously object.

One thing that bothers me the most is that some people feel the “office” of the president is being disrespected. That is meaningless. Power should be questioned at all times, especially when bad things are being planned or being done. Where were all the democrats saying the same thing to Bush II when he was in office? They rolled over for all kinds of stupid and evil garbage like falsified intelligence, increased obfustication and secrecy of executive actions, large scale wars, out of control spending, unnecessary death, torture, and illegal wiretapping. The democrats have controlled both houses since 2006 and made no effort to get out of the wars, have continued to fund them and even expanded it into Pakistan as Obama has gotten into office. The democrats should have called Bush II out, just like Wilson did to Obama, but they never did.

This concept of decorum or politeness or “respect for the office” is dangerous especially when you are traveling down the wrong path.

Anonymous September 16, 2009 at 1:25 am

Just out of curiosity, amigo, are you saying you believe that Wilson’s accusation was planned and not spontaneous?

BTW I’d feel a lot better about your intelligence if you’d said, “I hate the republicans as much as I hate the democrats, or I hate the democrats as much as I hate the republicans.”

Because, of course, “everyone” knows that all the troubles of America are caused by those right of the socialist…..right?

Just wondering.

Obama is working with the banks to rob productive individuals. This is just a bunch of misdirection to distract the fools.

Henri Hein September 15, 2009 at 3:32 am

With all the bailouts, Obama et al has set up the moral hazard to precisely invite excessive risk taking.

“Do As I Say,” indeed.

bb_gun September 15, 2009 at 3:37 am

whew…very accurate tagging, definitely not from the onion. stick to the day job don =)

louh September 15, 2009 at 4:45 am

How can we know where the excessive risk taking occurred since the gov. so badly distorted the outcome.
