Happy Birthday, James M. Buchanan

in Economics

Today Jim Buchanan celebrates his 90th birthday.  Happy birthday Jim!

Winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Economics, Jim — professor emeritus at George Mason University — is not just an economist.  He’s a deep political philosopher.  A pioneer in public-choice economics, no scholar in history has done as much as has Jim to provide us with a conceptual framework enabling us to see clearly the logic of politics as it is connected with the logic of markets.

To celebrate Jim’s achievements, I will, for the next several days, post some of my favorite quotations from his voluminous writings.

I do adhere to your Happy Birthday wishes. I met James Buchanan in Porto Alegre, Brazil in the mid nineties and I fondly remember his warm attention to young people and his willingness to engage in extra program discussions. I wish him all the best.

The Honors College and Buchanan Fellows at Middle Tennessee State University have sent birthday wishes via DVD that includes the induction ceremony of the 3rd class of Fellows. They will do Dr. Buchanan proud.
All the best wishes from Murfreesboro.
