In yesterday’s Washington Post, the great George Will has an excellent column — with this outstanding concluding line:

Today, there is a name for the political doctrine that rejoices in scarcity of everything except government. The name is environmentalism.

“Today, there is a name for the political doctrine that rejoices in scarcity of everything except government. The name is environmentalism.”

Environmentalist do not rejoice in the scarcity of anything save toxins and climate changing chemicals who’s externalities free market advocates are willing to ignore preferring ideological pureness over potential grave risk to their own children’s future.

In fact we dread scarcity. Scarcity of open spaces, of old growth forest, of mountain glaciers and mountain meadows. And the scarcity of logic that prefers us pursuing short term needs and leaving fate to random chance rather than using our evolved intelligence to plan and order our own destiny.

People are much smarter then markets!

Some day our sons and daughters will be able to read back on what we had written of market collapses and environmental collapses so long ago. I hope they will see the value of prudence and forethought over impulse and blind faith.

“People are much smarter then markets!”

can you please define markets as you understand them? if markets aren’t people, what are they?

Al gore is my hero. I’ll try to emulate him and other libertarian Influenced gazillionaires. Thanks George. The business men want unfettered markets so badly that they are raining money into the campaign coffers of advocates of free markets such as Crook Dodd, Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama etc. You are awesome. Sen. Edwards, to whoms campaign you generously donated, has a huge heart, that he charged only $55000 for a speech on the evils of poverty. My goal is to emulate these larger than life human beings.

Should environmentalist be blacklisted and banned from employment and business?

They also rejoice in doctoring data to suport preferred results. Very scientific.

Yeah… that’s why we go out in groups with blow torches and melt glaciers all around the world.

But obviously we are not smart enough to fool clever folk like you.

You are my other Hero, muir. Obviously it’s all fault of car driving, air conditioning using, average human being in the developed world. How could these proles be so reckless? How else could glacier receid and expose 5000 year old foliage? I’m sure somebody lighted a torch, melted the glacier, and burried it down there back then. Or may be they were committing sin against humanity back then too – jerks. The proles need to be controlled; they shouldn’t be allowed to commit cardinal sin against Goddess Gaia.

I’m investing in alternative energy. My goal is to be the second carbon billionaire after his highness, libertarian Al Gore.
