The meddling and arrogance of Congress knows no bounds.  (HT Brandon Robison)

OK, this legislation is stupid and probably impossible to implement. But I would like to alert cable companies to a problem. Why are different channels at different volumes? I have Time Warner Cable in Austin, TX, and whenever I change channels, I also have to adjust the volume. It seems like ESPN is the loudest and the over-the-air networks are the most quiet.

No legislation please, but it seems like this would be a way for cable companies to serve customers better. I'm stuck right now, but if I ever buy a house, I will seriously consider switching to satellite TV.

    I hit this:

"This problem has existed for more than 50 years, but no one has properly addressed it," Eshoo said. "Under the CALM Act, consumers will no longer have to dive for the mute button."

    and could go no farther.

    Why is this a "problem"?

Why is this something that has to become a focus of any congresscritter? Holy-shit do not people have volume controls on their TVs or remotes like I do on mine? Better yet, WTF not just simply hit the mute button like I do if I should happen to be in front of the set checking out the foxy ladies on the Mexican TV channels or watching the infrequent football or baseball game?

My wife will tell anyone that it is possible for someone to watch two hours of a game and never get the TV off of mute.

Oh lord, please hear me and send fire and brimstone on that area known as Washington D.C., scour its memory from the minds of men, and glaze the land with fire so that politician can never go there again.

Let the next generation of public servants serve in small Quonset huts in western Oklahoma, huts that have no A/C or heating, and let them communicate by carrier pigeon or the USPO; and, Lord in closing let a valuable bounty be placed on their heads should they been seen more than 2 miles from their place of service.

    There, my Christmas prayer. :-D

Bless you chilluns and have a merry Christmas.

Is it possible to get a law outlawing heart attacks. I mean, they kill so many people it would be good to outlaw them.

Oh, be sensible for congress sake!

I actually like this. I agree that it's none of the government's business but I've always found this to be annoying too.

After years of reading Don Boudreaux I finally have a differing opinion. I hate being awoken from a deep sleep after crashing on the couch because the commercial startles me. And the people providing TV signals via cable have all sorts of privilege, so I don't mind if they have to give up blasting me with sound during commercials.

I feel so lucky to be cared for and watched by such a gracious government. Those raging capitalists are trying to burn my ears off with their evil products so they can get evil profits. There should be a progressive tax based on decibel level. It isn't fair that the louder commercials get my attention more than softer commercials.

    God help us.

Apparently there is no problem which can't be solved with legislation.
  • Methinks1776
There is no problem that can't be created by legislation that will then require more legislation to "fix" and by "fix" I obviously mean transfer more wealth and power to politicians. It's a perfect system.

You know what I hate is when you're watching a movie on TV and just when it gets to a really exciting part they switch to a commercial. They are taking away my right to enjoy this part of the movie uninterupted.
What Congress needs to do is ban TV stations from putting in commercials at these critical times of the movies. We need a Czar to go over each movie and decide which are critical parts and which are the dull parts and only allow the stations to play commercials at the beginning of the dull parts.
    I feel better now.
  • One would think Congress has more pressing concerns.
  • Geech
There is no concern more pressing for Congressmen than getting your name in the paper for some bold new legislation you're proposing.
  • Yeah, sorry, I'm living in a parallel universe where I hope and hope that politicians exercise self-discipline occasionally.
