… is from page 26 of Mario Vargas Llosa‘s essay (“Liberalism in the New Millennium“) in the superb collection from 2000, edited by Ian Vasquez, Global Fortune; here, of course, Mr. Llosa uses the term “liberals” in its original and proper meaning – namely, as a word to describe those people who advocate maximum possible freedom for the individual from the shackles of tribalist and collectivist superstitions, and from the dictates of the state:

For liberals, however, it is a great incentive to know that we are working toward an attainable goal.  The idea of a world united around a culture of liberty is not a utopia but a beautiful and achievable reality that justifies our efforts.
