[F]ew accounts of the emergence of capitalism deal with the absolutely essential task of nurturing values supportive of the new system.  It’s as though people think that because economies are about material things, only material forces operate in it when in fact economies involve human beings who don’t do anything without an idea in their heads….  Capitalist values could not be imposed by authority because the genius of the new entrepreneurial economy was individual initiative.
