The parliamentary opposition which emerged under James I and exploded into rebellion under his successor did not so much insist on the king’s convening parliaments and honoring their authority in taxation on the grounds of historical precedent or constitutional principle, but rather invoked these precedents and this principle to ensure the inviolability of property.
