My friend David Hart – scholar extraordinaire – took notice of my recent, less-than-awe-inspired mention of the U.S. Capitol dome as being an example of one of the many props intended to deify the state. My mention in that earlier post of the Capitol dome was done with precisely this essay in mind – although I’d forgotten where the essay appears and even that it is written by David.
I thank David not only for the original essay, but for reminding me of the source of my awareness that the U.S. Capitol dome sports a truly appalling image, painted by Constantino Brumidi, of George Washington residing god-like in the heavens.
