… is from page 62 of my GMU Econ colleague Tyler Cowen’s remarkably insightful and lucid 1998 volume, In Praise of Commercial Culture:

Privately-owned libraries, run for profit, facilitated access to literature.  By the end of the eighteenth century, about 1,000 such libraries were operating in England, and they accounted for over half of the copies purchased for most books.
