Are any shibboleths in contemporary political rhetoric more misleading than the progressives’ claim to be “pro-choice” and the conservatives’ claim to be “pro-life”? It is broadly true, of course, that progressives want abortion to be legal and conservatives want it to be illegal. But it is a joke to say that in general progressives favor free choice and conservatives are pro-life. The former seek to legally restrict free choice in countless regards, and the latter are almost always gung-ho for killing as long as it is done by the police and the military.
