51vddvsvc0l-_sx322_bo1204203200_Free trade and free movements of capital are profoundly at odds with the nation-state.  The Swedish economic historian Eli Heckscher has described how mercantilism emerged from the need of European Renaissance rulers to gather rival groups into more ordered political structures, which developed into what we today call “nations.”  Mercantilism, then, is the very wellspring of the nation-state.
