… if his idea of desirable “tough” trade negotiations by government officials were applied to individual extended families, would recommend to the head of the Smith family that he, Mr. Smith, imitate the actions of the head of the Jones family whenever the head of the Jones family is observed (or is believed to be observed) improving the well-being of one or two Jones by whipping, punishing, and depriving the great majority of the Jones. The protectionist would counsel the head of the Smith family to stick resolutely to this course of action as long as the head of the Jones family is observed (or is believed to be observed) treating the Jones family in this horrific way.
