Bonus Quotation of the Day…

… is from my intrepid Mercatus Center colleague Veronique de Rugy’s superb column in the November 2018 issue of Reason titled “Next Steps in the Fight for Free Trade” (original emphasis):

[T]oo few people understand that the economic reasons to support free trade – that is, getting rid of all trade barriers, including tariffs – do not depend on what other countries do…. It would be great for all governments to pursue the same policy of free trade, but it makes no sense to punish Americans with tariffs in order to convince foreign governments to stop punishing their citizens with tariffs.

DBx: A billion-and-two-times yes. Because protectionists latch on to whatever arguments they can, no matter how flimsy and unethical, in search of support for their plunder, this point cannot be repeated too often.
