… is from pages 106-107 of philosopher Aeon Skoble’s excellent 2008 book, Deleting the State:

Even today, every expansion of state power, even when resisted in some quarters, has at its base a widely accepted (and generally unexamined) claim that it is both necessary and proper. All political entities try to increase their own legitimacy with this claim. Today arguments about market failure and ‘tacit consent’ have taken the place of theories of the divine right of kings.
