There’s Truth in Tiebout

Here’s a letter to the Wall Street Journal:

Editor:

James Freeman reports on Californians’ understandably intensifying itch to flee the Golden State for jurisdictions less greedy for citizens’ gold, and more willing and able to govern responsibly (“Wokesters Without Giant Endowments,” Dec. 15). I recently encountered clear evidence of the massive out-migration of Californians when visiting my brother and sister-in-law in a suburb of Nashville – their new home since giving up on California in January 2022. Although traffic is congested in and around Nashville, what with the hordes of blue-staters flocking there, motorists stuck in traffic nevertheless find amusement – as I did twice in as many days – by seeing signs reading “Gavin Newsom: Realtor of the Year!”
