“Wartime prosperity,” however, is a myth: the war [WWII] merely replaced the economic suffering of the 1930s with a new form of privation, in many ways a worse form. Only in 1945-46, with the end of the war and the reconversion of the command economy to a more market-directed economic order, did genuine prosperity resume and persist.
