… is from pages 224-225 of my friend and former professor Randy Holcombe’s superb 2019 book, Liberty in Peril: Democracy and Power in American History:

For democracy to work as a long-term component of government, its role must strictly be limited, as the Founders intended. There is a tendency to view criticism of democracy as anti-American, but an analysis of American political history shows that its Founders tried to prevent the creation of the type of democracy that characterizes twenty-first-century American government.
