Those who believe that merchandise trade is more important than services trade are probably thinking of services such as haircuts, restaurant meals, and others that are provided primarily by low-skilled workers. In fact, however, many of the higher-wage jobs in the twenty-first century are in services that employ, for example, software engineers, IT experts, medical doctors, and architects. Many of those services used to be almost entirely provided by nationals within each country for their compatriots. Now medical tourism, international construction firms, insurance, and many more services are increasingly international in scope.
