The Soviet Union sold its Marxist-Leninist policies to Russian citizens by claiming that they would unleash a flood of material wealth – leaving the western world far behind. When it became painfully obvious that socialism could not fulfill that promise, socialists changed the story. Austerity became a feature, not a bug. Too many consumer goods corrupted people and made them weak.

Trump is borrowing the socialists’ playbook – similar top-down policies, same excuses.
