…is from page 98 of the 1993 Reissue edition of Darrell Huff’s classic 1954 volume, How to Lie With Statistics:

Permitting statistical treatment and the hypnotic presence of numbers and decimal points to befog causal relationships is little better than superstition.  It is often more seriously misleading.

Data never speak for themselves – a fact that speaks to the need for those who collect, process, and interpret data to do so with sound theory.
