Fact-Checking Trump

The ‘fact’ trumpeted by Trump about how the fall in El Paso’s crime rate is caused by a border wall isn’t quite accurate. (HT my Mercatus Center colleague Dan Griswold)

Of course, a moment’s thought about Trump’s assertion should cleanse the mind of any risk of falling for it. Violent crime in, for example, Detroit is higher than in El Paso despite Detroit being much further than is El Paso from the nearest non-walled part of the U.S.-Mexico border. This great distance is surely something of a formidable barrier to overcome for very poor non-Americans.
