The Trump tariffs are very bad for the US and for the world. It reflects my own political prejudices but what depresses me almost as much as the tariffs themselves is the pathetic hand-wringing from the British-European media ‘left’ epitomized in the pages of The Guardian. For years they have been publishing columnists relentless in their attacks on ‘free trade’ and ‘neo-liberal globalisation’ and endorsing supposedly ‘edgy’ economists such as Ha Joon Chang for supporting ‘targeted protection’. Now that the chickens are coming home to roost and a major leader has taken these theories seriously, predictably they have run a mile, with a ‘not me guv’ attitude that beggars belief.
